Tom Trovas has been part of the music scene for more than four decades. He has been a member/founder of various blues, jazz and funk bands in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Before moving to the East Coast from his hometown of Des Moines, Iowa, Tom was the “go-to” guitarist for many area acts.
During the Woodstock era of the '60s and '70s, Trovas played with some of the most extraordinary talents of that time, such as Bugsy Maugh of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, and shared the stage with the band members of such giants as Janis Joplin and Frank Zappa and Van Morrison. As a member of Lloyd Simms and Hotshot, an R&B band, Tom toured Canada for three years. He was a founding member of The Force on Philadelphia International Records, a band heading Billy Paul of Me and Mrs. Jones fame. By 1979, Trovas had a recording contract with Philadelphia International Records. And while countless bands in Atlantic City of the '80s knew Tom as their lead guitarist, his proudest experience in those years came from his work with legendary saxophonist Hank Mobley. He has opened for the likes of The Spinners, Shemekia Copeland, The Iguanas, Steve Guyger, Studebaker John, Danielle Nicole and Little Charlie and the Nightcats.
For the past ten years, Tom was the lead guitarist for The Buicks, the famed Philadelphia R&B band. His work with them produced many original songs and gained the recognition of blues societies throughout the Philadelphia/Baltimore region. He and the band were the winners of the Baltimore Blues Society, 2006 for "Best Blues Band". Tom and The Buicks went on to Memphis to compete in the International Blues Challenge in 2007.
Born in Waterloo, Iowa, Trovas listened to music of every genre from the time he was ten years old. He began teaching himself how to play the guitar at twelve after he had inherited his uncle’s guitar and a vast record collection. Trovas is not only a gifted guitar player, but a songwriter and studio artist as well. He is a published songwriter, arranger and producer with BMI.
Currently, Tom can be found playing with the Tom Trovas Group. From blues to jazz to gospel to funk, Tom Trovas plays it all.
